In With The New!

In With The New! That's what we care about here in East Texas and probably everywhere in North America for sure!

We have to let go of 2008 with a weak wave of the hand and get on with fixing, cleaning and getting rid of old messes. The old expression, "No use crying over spilled milk" surely applies today!

The media is full of all the bad stuff that has happened during 2008. I think we all have that quite memorized. We must move on!

We need to go to the supermarket and pick up our very favorite snacks and watch the TV New Year programs. This year, there is one person who will be very busy indeed! That would be the person at CNN who will have his/her finger on the bleep button. I think that person has about a 7 second delay to clean it up. Anderson Cooper (Anderson Cooper 360) will have Kathy Griffin joining him this year. That will be interesting . . .

Dick Clark will make his usual appearance as the ball drops in Times Square. We all like to see this man, even if he is not able to do all he used to, because he reminds us of the great years gone by when we celebrated with him. Of course, we have to remember also his wonderful American Bandstand Show on weekday afternoons. (I have a friend here who actually used to go down to American Bandstand in Philadelphia! I was impressed!)

By now, you well know that I am a nostalgia and trivia buff. I do like to think at least a bit about the "good old days" which this year, truly do seem just that!

Also, of course, tonight is the night that we take pen and paper and mark down all those things we know we should try to do next year - tomorrow plus.

Special Blessings to the new administration here in the U.S. because they will have to work 24/7 to get things back and put a few smiles on the taxpayers, and stockholders and - for the last time this year - Joe - yup - "Joe Six Pack".

By the way, he used to be Champagne Sherman until he could only afford to split a 6 pack of beer
in 2008!

Happy, Happy New Year 2009 and may you and yours have many blessings, Good Health and Prosperity!

2009 Resolution: Pay Attention To The Job At Hand

In New York City yesterday, there was an industrial-strength shredder set up in Times Square. The idea was that people would bring things from 2008 that needed to be forgotten.

People brought an assortment of bad memories from the year we are about to close out. Some were serious and some were more frivolous. It was simply a graphic to remind us we need to let go of 2008 which was pretty bad all round and start fresh in 2009.

This past year has been a strain on us all. I am not going to elaborate the things that have gone wrong.

On a personal note, I will tell you that as a crowning touch for us the other day, our bank bounced my Canadian Pension check ("cheque" for my Canadian readers). After twelve years, my pension check was bounced! We use the same procedure each time, and this month, they bounced it! (Basically, we write and deposit a check written off a Canadian financial institution U.S. dollar account and deposit it at the ATM here.)

Things like this happen all the time. . . to all of us.

Hello??? Is anybody paying attention to what they are doing?

It takes valuable time to straighten out mistakes like that. What a waste!

Now, it is entirely possible that we wrote the check incorrectly. If we did, wouldn't it be nice for the bank to telephone us and let us know? Oh, I forgot, they don't use telephones in financial institutions any more . . .

There is a very old expression that goes something like this: take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves!

When each individual starts to do their job with diligence, the entire organization's productivity will increase, the stock will go back up and our portfolio will go back up so we can go back to living the life we were living before so many large corporations had to borrow money from us.

Did you forget, government is funded by taxpayers? That is us. Yes, we had to finance some financial institutions and some car makers this year. Yes, yes, they borrowed from us. Let's hope they pay us back with a little better service than we are are getting.

Put down the cell phones, stop conversing with your fellow employees and please concentrate on what you are doing!

(Just to clarify, in our twelve years of marriage, we have never before had a bounced check.)

Three More Days . . .

Only three more days left in 2008 to tidy up and bring in the New Year!

The Scottish have a tradition that on New Year's Eve, they tidy their cupboards and clean house to be ready for the new year.

My Dad believed the Christmas decorations should be down before the new year, or there would be bad luck. (We believe that Christmas season does not end till January 6th, but, a few things could come down to give us a fresh start!)

Lots of people have lots of ideas, that's for sure. I have a few practical ones to help us out of this abysmal 2008 and into a fresh year.

Some of us need to take a few minutes here and a few minutes there to clear the clutter - a little bit at least, in each room.

We could round up those clothes we do not wear but that are in good condition and take them down to the Second Hand Store where someone else will find them and enjoy them.

Let's put up those new calendars around the house now. Most of them have December on them. We have had our Holly Weems' Century 21 Magnetic Calendar on the frig for a few weeks now! Ah, yes, perhaps I need to remove a few of the old things from that frig while I think about it!

In the office, there are a few things to be filed, aren't there? Uh, oh!

Hmm . . . I should make sure I do some form of exercise tape starting tomorrow, so I don't put that off! Richard Simmons would be perturbed to think we hadn't worked out over the holiday!

Must put all gifts away! Books on bookshelf or coffee table and clothing hung gently in the closet. (Of course, we did that when we cleared out a few things to take to the Thrift Store, didn't we?) Of course, I have to put my bath goodies away on the shelf.

Must find the spoon rest that went missing. When doing that, I can toss out a couple - okay, more than a couple - of things that are junking up the kitchen.

Must tidy shoes in closet - hmm, I already did that! Get out the writing paper or notes and thank the people who gave us nifty gifts! A book on scrapbooking! Wowee - that was perfect! Cash - that was perfect! Send notes to a couple of people we did not know where to send cards before Christmas - I'm sure they will understand!

Ask God to bless all the people who gave me chocolate for Christmas! I know that means my friends think I am slimmer than I think. I like those friends very much!

I always feel good about clearing and decluttering! It makes the house look a little larger and helps me to feel more positive about everything! So, let's do that - just a few minutes at a time and let's feel positive about having a fresh slate for 2009!

Time to Believe

Although not on this blog, I have written Christian articles elsewhere. This is a subject I have thought about a lot but I will just address it briefly this time.

There is an expression that in his worst hour, a person will believe.

That makes perfect sense, and I am counting on that to be true. It does make me sad though.

There is another expression that goes, "Better to believe and find out you were wrong than not to believe and find out you were wrong".

There are lots of different religions where beliefs are different of course, but I am talking Christianity here.

What is it that causes people to walk away from the Church?

I know some have been deeply hurt by someone within the church.

I myself have had two instances just since coming to Texas where I felt people were really, really mean to me. I read and I talked to my Pastor, and I came up with one thing that is very true for me. I have the "power" to forgive that person who hurt me and doing just that turned out to be probably the very best thing I ever did for myself.

Sometimes people will ask to be forgiven - that makes it easy! I am talking about forgiving someone who did not even ask. Why didn't they ask? Probably because after their anger had subsided and they were back to their real personality, they were too embarrassed to even speak to the person they had hurt.

Then, there is another scenario. That would be when someone who you really respected did something that you knew was not right. That would be a parent who left your other parent; a person close to you who did something blatantly outside the Christian mores. (As you age, you probably realize that back then you did not know all the facts.)

Especially in tough times - when we have financial stress, bad health, problems within our families - it is time to come back to our original faith we were taught from when we were little.

Go to church. Pray. If you cannot actually go to church, watch one of the services on television. Although each preacher is different, most have some fine messages.

Let go of the bad stuff that sent you away from your religion, whatever it was, and get back to some basics. The first time will be hard, but it gets easier and easier until you will not even stop to think about it. You'll feel so good. Maybe your problems will be solved. Possibly your health will be better. Maybe. Maybe not. But you will feel better about yourself and you owe that to yourself.

Have a blessed day!

Sweetest Little Dog On The Face Of The Earth!

I was offered a small white female Shih Tzu dog last night. She had come to the door of my friend's home, looking for someone to help her. I believe she lucked out on the door she found! My friend is very much an animal lover. On the flip side, the Shih Tzu is a breed very easy to love. I used to call them the Sweetest Little Dog On The Face Of The Earth!

The Shih Tzu was originally bred to be a companion to the ladies of the Chinese palace. They are very loving and just live to please their owners.

So, why - why would someone abandon this sweet little girl? Perhaps her family just could not afford to feed her and take care of her any more. Perhaps they had to move. Especially in a poor economy, we are going to see a lot of dogs looking to be rescued by some kind soul.

Now, don't feel bad because I did not take her. My friend will be happy to have her. She has lots of space and is used to the grooming this little tyke will need.

Her hubby went home to browse the ads to see if someone might be looking for this little doll but she was badly matted and kind of hungry, so perhaps someone let her off on the roadside.

The irony is that I was set to crop (scrapbook) some of my own Shih Tzu. I owned, bred and showed Shih Tzu for twenty-five years. I wanted a little chronology of my breeding and showing. I enjoyed my Shih Tzu very much. (The Shih Tzu breed was developed by crossing the Pekingese and the Lhasa Apso.)

I brought my last two homebred Shih with me to Texas - Sadie and Harry. They got along well and Keith suitably spoiled them. After Harry's death, we said that was it. Of course, we lasted five weeks until we chose Buddy the Lhasa - pictured below - to be part of our family.

I have chosen the Shih Tzu photo above because I think that is just about what this little girl will look like once she is cleaned up.

Especially over the holiday season, let us hope that all the little abandoned dogs and cats find as good a home as this little gal has found! Oh, and by the way - give your own dog a big hug for me!

Buddy Knows We Found Him In The Lufkin Daily News!

Posted by Picasa

New Year's Eve Pie Chart - Just a Part of Why We Love to Read Real Newspapers!

At Facebook, you can join a group of people who want newspapers to still be around for a long time. Of course, I belong to that group. It's called Tell Five Friends How Important Newspapers Are!

Now, I liked to think that at least five people read this blog each day, so I guess I will have done my part. There is nothing quite like riffling through a real newspaper every day.

We subscribe to the Lufkin Daily News, which is part of the Cox consortium. It's a good little paper and brings us the highlights of what is happening in our city and Angelina County, along with some sports - especially local high school football in season. It has an editorial page with some very good columnists - some to the left, some to the right and publishes letters to the editor. There are features that everyone likes to see - although they might not admit it: Dear Abby, Dr. Gott, People, horescopes, comics. Especially on weekends, there are columns by local writers. You can find out what movie is playing and what's on TV. It's a source of general local information - stuff you can use. I read it cover to cover every day.

Additionally, we used to subscribe to the Houston Chronicle to get the big city feel - especially for sports and finances. Then one day, they decided they didn't want to bother with home delivery to a little place like Lufkin.

We found that we could subscribe to USA Today and actually receive it by mail the same day. It's not the same as a big city paper, but we are used to the format because that is the paper we receive at our hotel door with our Priority or Honors card. So, I am used to it.

In the weekend edition of USA Today for Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week, they have presented something you would want to know, so let me tell you about it!

One assumes that more people than ever will be celebrating New Year's Eve at home this year and USA Today has published the following info which I will not credit because it is not too clear just who worked on this.

This has been a terrible year and one can only hope that 2009 will bring some remedies. So, since we are celebrating at home, what will we be wearing? Ah, yes, there is a pie chart with slices showing: 51% will be in pajamas or sweats with 4% in a bathrobe. I think I would lump those folks together for 55%. Fancy outfits will be worn by only 1% while 32% will be in jeans with a top/sweater. Now, 12% will be wearing other. Of course, I am kind of wondering what is left for "other", but that is fine. I love pie charts and I expect you do too! That's just another reason to keep on reading real newspapers!

For all the "high tech", don't you want a little break in your day where you can actually flip through the pages of a real newspaper? What about the want ads? Where do you suppose we found Buddy The Lhasa?

Ah, yes, all the little things that come to you in your local newspaper are well worth the subscription!

Thoughts of Boxing Day and The Young People Home for the Holiday

Even though I’ve been in East Texas for twelve years, I still think of the day after Christmas as Boxing Day. That comes from the English custom of opening Christmas presents the day after Christmas. Of course, that would never work in United States because nobody here likes to wait for anything!

Today the stores are open and all of them have big sales. So . . . for me that is a good place not to go! There are still friends and family to visit, neighbors to see, and there is lots of food still left to go around!

Now, I have an all-day scrapbooking event today. It starts at 10.00 a.m. and goes till midnight! I don’t even have to set up my stuff because it is all there in the crop room, waiting for me. Everybody takes food – you know, just like a Lutheran potluck - and we have a fine, relaxing time all day. It’s easy for me to come and go because I live really close. For today, I have selected some old pictures to crop. After holiday gift books for others, I think that’s what I’d like to do.

Scrapbooking is a perfect hobby for me because it is so calming. Today, I have a few more pictures of my Shih Tzu dogs. Now, I w; ll have a short pictorial of my 25 years owning, breeding and showing Shih Tzu. I have also collected some photos from my late teens and early twenties. It is good for me to compile those photos. I was not the most popular, nor the prettiest, or so I thought. As I look at those photos now, all these years later, I can see that I was more attractive than I had remembered. Back at St. Clement’s in Toronto, I had the nickname “Merry Mother Martha Jane”. So, I guess I was always interested in others.

That helps me to realize that it is important for me and for others to make sure we let young people know we think they are smart and attractive. A young person who feels good about themselves is going to produce better academically and enjoy life more. Young people are very easily influenced and one mean remark can nag at them for a long time. Youth cannot see that, but since we can, it is up to us to make sure they have a good feeling about themselves.

As we age, we learn that there will always be someone more attractive, more gifted at studies, richer, more outgoing. Somehow, most of us learn to be the best we can be and to gather round us those who make us feel comfortable.

Especially at church, I have young friends who are very impressionable, who are trying to find their way through the early years. I try to take time to stop and say something or ask them a question that will result in putting a smile on another face.

You can do that too – take a few extra minutes today to make someone else – especially a young person – feel good about themselves.

It sure is good to see the young people home for the holidays. We pray for their safe return back to school, work, and armed forces.

We sure have enjoyed having you home!

The Christmas Carol Everybody Knows

Thinking about our Troops away from home today, I think about how many times you hear that soldiers were singing Silent Night while they were huddled together, far away from home. This is the Christmas Carol everybody knows. It is the one we will sing tonight at the end of our Christmas Eve service. It will be broadcast on radio and TV many times today and tomorrow.

Hope you are just about prepared to put aside everything else and enjoy family and friends on this Christmas Eve. God Bless America; God Bless Us All as we celebrate the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. Here are the words for you:

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth "

Last Minute Tips - You Can Be Ready!

Today is THE day when you really can pull it all together. Tomorrow you want to be kicking back and ready for the friends and relatives coming in. So, let's get the chores out of the way.

Gifts: Hope you have all your presents bought but if there is something you feel you still need, you might consider trying Walgreen, CVS or Shoppers Drug Mart. (What, no Shoppers Drug in your neighborhood? Wish there was one in my neighborhood: it's another thing I miss from Canada!) We were in Walgreen last night and they have a huge number of ideas as would the other major drug chains. There are CDs, TV promoted items, massagers, perfume, candles, potpourri, wrap, candies, etc. Parking was not too bad and check out was fairly easy.

Groceries: Okay, this one is the tough one. Make sure your list is complete and that you already double-checked that you don't have an item on your "goody shelf that will do. Make your list flexible: if you look for one exact item, it could be difficult, so write "cocktail rye or similar; olives - stuffed or plain". Stop to look up and smile at the other shoppers because - guess what? They are in the same situation as you are! Give them a "Merry Christmas" and you will make their day and yours a little better.

Wrapping: Enlist some help with the last minute wraps and try to use gift sacs if possible - pick those up at the pharmacy or food store.

When you are out, keep your stops to a minimum.

One stop you do make might be at the drive-thru to get tonight's dinner - a nice simple Burger King or McDonald's. The Pizza deliveries are going to be backlogged. Know that up front.

House still not spic and span? Back at the drug store you could have picked up some potpourri. That is amazing stuff that just sends a wonderful scent through the entire house. Put some at the entrance, some in the living areas and some in the guest bath.

Change the towels in the guest bath and give it a quick clean up. That might be the one place family and guests will notice.

If you live in a house like ours, the dining room table is one of the first things your guests see. So, even when you are not ready for a meal - put out some candles and a dish of fruit or candy in the middle. Put on a Christmas CD. Turn on the Christmas lights early - inside and out.

Don't forget to send a Holiday Message to everyone on your e-mail list. Not everyone is as fortunate as we to have people coming in to visit. They will really appreciate that you are thinking about them! We use Jacquie Lawson Cards. I think we renewed at $12 for the year. We definitely got our money's worth this past year. The cards are fun and beautiful! Find them at www.jacquielawson.com.

Kick back. Remember, if their house were spic and span, they would have invited you there!

I may not be Martha Stewart with a fleet of workers at my house but there is more than one Martha way to get it done!

Have a great day! I mean it!

Honest Ed Goes To Washington!

Long before chains of discount stores, in Toronto at Bloor Street West and Bathurst, there was - and still is - a huge store with fluorescent lights flashing round the building and people lined on the sidewalks waiting to get in each weekday morning. It is named after its founder, Ed Mirvish and called HONEST ED'S. There is a sign that welcomes customers, "This Way, You Lucky People!"

Ed Mirvish used to sit in his second floor office overlooking the store and dreaming up the punchlines for his full page ads in the Toronto dailies. He loved his business and had a flair for the outrageous. Every day there was something marked down to a ridiculous price and every day there was always a crowd waiting to get in to shop.

Ed Mirvish was also a patron of the arts, with a personal art collection, more than one theater and he even bought up some houses on Markham Street at the side of the Store to help out artists. This man just loved life and it was reflected in the projects he took on and the rewards heaped on him.

Seldom comes along such a flamboyant person who actually does so much for a city, with so much fun as Ed Mirvish. He also had some restaurants - one called Ed's Warehouse with carousel horses hung suspended from the ceiling.

Well, it seems about 4 years ago, when he was having his 90th birthday, the Toronto Police Force named a horse for Honest Ed.

Two horses from the Toronto Police Horse Guard will be in Washington for the inauguration of Barack Obama.

Mr. Mirvish died at age 92 a couple of years ago but I can assure you he would think that was some bargain that a horse named after him would be doing that! Why, he probably would have had a special sale in honor of Barack Obama!

I imagine his son is still running the businesses and so, I'd like to suggest to David Mirvish that he put on sale plain ties for $3.65 Canadian on January 20th. (That translates to about $2.98 American today - genuine value!)

June Cleaver - Leave It To Beaver: Barbara Billingsley is 93 Today!

No, no, of course, that can't be right! Apparently so! Leave It to Beaver aired from 1957 to 1963. (There was also a program called Still the Beaver aired 1985 to 1989.)

In the original sitcom which was a must-watch in every household, father Ward Cleaver was played by Hugh Beaumont. Wally was played Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers played the Beav.

This sitcom was set in prosperous times and the Cleavers lived in a lovely, oversize house on a tree-lined street with sidewalks and spacious lawns. Suffice it to say that Mrs. Cleaver was a stay at home mom who spent a lot of time in the kitchen and served the family dinner in the dining room.

I can picture Mr. Cleaver at the head of the table dressed a bit more formally than most fathers today. (Even my own Dad used to change to a sport shirt and casual slacks from his business suit when he came home).

If you go back as far as we do, hope you have fond memories of watching this program!

The Joy of Christmas Wrapping

Uh, oh . . . didn't I say I should toss this paper last year? It's thin and it rips just when the package is about wrapped.

Hum . . . where is that cap for Meghan? It's not with the unwrapped and it's not with the wrapped.

Square boxes are really hard to wrap!

There were three rolls of Scotch tape here a minute ago . . .

I should have bought more gift sacks.

Yes, this is the last year I'm using wrapping paper . . . too much like work!

Hmm . . . why is the tissue paper so small I have to use two sheets just to line the box?

Uh, oh - Pink for Meghan, Green for Meghan?

Let's just put this stuffed Teddy for Ava up really high where Buddy can't find it!

Oh, oh . . . that was the garbage bag, Keith . . .

There really isn't enough room to wrap stuff . . . funny though, we have the dining table and two other tables set up.

Are we disorganized? Did we buy enough? Did we buy too much? Is this the right color?

Yes, yes, we are wrapping and so, probably are you. No matter how much preparation goes into it all, well, Christmas gifting is a tough job.

How does Santa do it, year after year, after year? Mrs. Claus and the Elf's, of course!

Pulling It Together For Christmas

Well, I was cropping (scrapbooking) last night instead of finishing my wrapping and decorating for the Christmas Season. I am not too worried, as the Christmas season will actually begin for us on Christmas Eve and goes through to January 6th (Little Christmas).

Each year since I have been in Texas, I thought about my Dad suggesting that all decorations be down before the New Year or there would be bad luck. That was one of his beliefs.

In our subdivision, which is pretty keen on outdoor decorating, the outdoor displays used to come down on December 26th.

We do have outdoor lights and two beautiful wooden angels, silhouetted against the house, a banner and a wreath on the door, so it looks from the outside as though we have "our act together".

Today, I'll chip away at the wrapping and Hubby and I will bring a little tree and trims down from the attic.

(Yes - we mailed our Christmas cards quite some time ago!)

If you can relate to any of this, then hopefully, this weekend you will be able to pull it together and be ready for family and other company coming to visit. Do remember that it is not necessary to put up every decoration you have.

Of course, if you have a "Buddy", like our Lhasa Apso, you'll need to keep things up off the floor and all the plush toys as far up as you can put them.

Plush toys? Well, yes - my greatest find this year was a beautiful large lady bear with a hand-made, layered crocheted dress for Ava. (I guess she will have to put it up on her dresser; I don't imagine it's for playing.) I do have plush toys (well hidden) for Buddy, of course! and I have a wonderful plush singing On The Road Again . . . You know, that's as Texas as it gets! For those of you up north, well, Willy Nelson is pretty much equal to Gov. Rick Perry and Lyle Lovett as representing Texas!

You'll also notice I say "I have" this and "I have" that . . . How many Hubbies actually hit the stores to purchase the gifts? No, that would be the wife's job, wouldn't it?

Well, as a fabulous consolation, Hubby made the house pretty much sparkle while I was cropping last night. And . . . of course, I have a little more cropping to do today, soooo . . .

Never, never say never - because today and tomorrow, you're going to pull it together and be able to enjoy this Season.

Well, that's a classy way to move out!

Today, George W. and Laura Bush unveiled portraits of themselves. This one of Mrs. Bush seems to capture her serenity and her love of books. It's very nice! The one of the President captures him without a tie in a more informal pose..

This is a very nice tradition as the President and First Lady leave the White House - oh, in about 32 days - and head back to Texas.

Relaxation: An Essential Part of Your Day

No matter how many problems you have during your day – at work and at home – it is an absolute must to wind down, preferably at the end of your day.

Dinner together is not always possible generally because of schedules, but sitting down with spouse and/or family to share a meal should be a priority. Try for this as many nights a week as possible.

Sleep is extremely important to how well we perform our daily tasks and how we respond to others in our work and family relationships.

Falling asleep in a recliner while grading papers is quite common among teachers, I gather. Probably many others doze off while attempting to beat a deadline. This is not a good way to get your required amount of sleep.

Taking time to kick back, play with the dog, chat with your spouse and listen, really listen to others helps all of us do our daily routine even better. At the end of the day, it is good to wind down and clear the work, troubles and finances from your mind.

Most everything looks better after a good night’s sleep and early morning is an excellent time to finish off projects and come up with solutions to problems. If you rise really early, it is a chance for you to be quiet and work without interruption.

If you are a regular reader, you know I often mention something I think will take your mind away from problems. So, you know I believe very strongly in what I am saying.

There is worry enough to go around, but let us find relaxing, ordinary or even silly things to really relax.

Oh, yes: let’s make a couple of decisions about those holiday (formerly “Christmas”) tasks.

With one week to go, a very good time to shop is very early in the morning or late at night. If you could manage going to Wal-Mart at about 2:00 a.m., your gift list could be totally fulfilled. (Of course, you should get some sleep before heading over to Wally World.)

Ditch the wrapping paper and use gift sacks.

Are you certain you want every decoration out this year? You could just pick a few, you know.

Are you sure you need a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings or would everyone be just as happy with a buffet of goodies? Relaxed rather than formal could be very good this year.

No apologizing! This has been a rough year, not just for you but for all your friends and family as well.

The ticket is to kick back and enjoy friends and family – especially those coming in from out-of-town. They won’t mind, as Grandma called it – “Store Bought” - if it means getting to sit down and chat with you.

Take a deep breath, now and have a piece of cheese or a cup of yoghurt . . .

Today is Big Dog Day: Taking a Look at the Newfoundland

The largest dog I have personally owned is Red, The Boxer and of course, that is really a medium-sized dog.

We once tossed out the Trivial Pursuit card because we considered the answer for the largest dog to be incorrect. (Trival Pursuit buffs do toss out a few of the cards!)

Big Dogs are individuals too and if we are looking at some of the major purebred big dogs, we are looking at some gentle giants who make fine family companions. Now, it is a given that one has to have a clear coffee table, lots of large expanses in the house, and a large backyard. It is a given that a large dog eats a lot, but generally they eat what you set down for them - good, crunchy kibble with perhaps some gravy on top. (Not that our smaller dogs would ever waste any food . . . )

My personal experience with large dogs is that they generally train more easily than small dogs and have more confidence.

Probably because I am Canadian, I will tell you that the Newfoundlander is just about the gentlest giant dog you could pick. Not only is he very handsome, he also can be a fine rescue dog. He is a natural swimmer. He is a very lovable dog, once you accept the fact that he is very, very large!

I'll leave it to you to go the American Kennel Club website if you would like to know more about the Newfoundland who is a breed indigenous to Canada.

Welcome Home, Soldier!

Granddaughter Meghan is on her way home from South Korea today. I'll bet she won't be wearing her combat boots as she rushes from security to see her parents today.

We have been praying that her trip would be safe and uneventful and we are so looking forward to seeing our girl.

We generally make macaroni when she comes over and we have a few little gifts for her. She will be amazed at Ava. Ava grew real tall since Meghan saw her at her Baptism, a year ago September. Ava, of course, is a real little girl now, a person in her own right. (I also know that Meghan will feel a little sad that she missed watching Ava at her different stages, but I have lots of scrapbook pages to show her!)

I should mention that her brother (and Nadine) will be in from L.A. We are truly blessed to have everyone here at Christmas this year!

Many other families will get to see their soldiers, sailors, airmen & marines too, but many will not. We pray for all families who will not have their children and grandchildren home this year. God Bless!

Mary Poppins!

Well, you know you have gifts to wrap and perhaps decorations to put up and a tree to trim indoors. Now, it's not a Christmas film, but the movie, Mary Poppins is absolutely my favorite of all time. It's light and has lots of music. You don't have to really be watching to enjoy it while you get your Christmas in order.

Mary Poppins is on the Family channel tonight. It will surely help you to relax and you'll have those gifts wrapped and the house decorated at the same time.

Have a calm day!

Instant Communication - Good or Bad?

For a long time now, I have wanted to comment on My Space and Facebook.

We have just been through a court case which was probably not decided to the satisfaction of too many people. I am speaking of the mother who created a boyfriend for an acquaintance of her daughter. The girl committed suicide as a result of the "boyfriend" not being truly interested in her.

Kathleen Parker addresses some of the valid concerns today about the "Information Highway" in her column. Ms. Parker is with The Washington Post Writers Group and her column is good reading.

Remember the song about Two Silhouettes On The Shade? That was about as bold as people got back in the 50s and 60s. Yes, we did some things we'd rather forget, but we did not put them up on a screen that could be viewed around the world by people who knew us and those who did not.

If you have never looked at My Space or Facebook, perhaps it is time you did. The only thing worse than people doing stupid or rotten things is people who have no clue what is going on in the world.

The concept of My Space and Facebook as "networking" has potential. I have a Facebook page but you have to request to be able to view it. So, I can let you in, or I can refuse you.

I opened my page about two days after creating it, to see some "potty-mouth" remarks by a younger person. I found I could block that person. So I did. (Understand that on Facebook, you can see remarks made by others to others, not just to you.)

Alternately, I enjoy seeing what my niece in Halifax is doing and can get quickly caught up on what my contemporaries are doing here at home without a half-hour phone conversation. So, it has the potential to be a time-saver.

On My Space, you can have a private or public page. On a private page, you can see the person's photo, and a few comments which could be pleasant or not. So, a person on My Space is not protected from themselves even on a private page.

(Yes, I know there are also blogs where people are presenting themselves less than best also.)

If you really want the entire world - or at least that part of it who will be interested enough in you to open your page - to know just a little more about you that they care to know - these are the places for you. What is the reason so many people no longer want to present themselves in a good light? Why would a person want anyone who has access to a computer to know that they drank too much, did drugs, etc. etc.?

When we turn on the evening news, we can readily see where the under 30s are getting their take on society. It is time politicians became accountable in every way. (The Illinois Governor should have already resigned.)

Athletes (who are being given enormous sums of money for sometimes very average performances) should be role models for young people. Some of these people can barely utter an intelligible sentence. There is no excuse for them constantly ending up in jails for an evening's stay.

We still have the "Big Three" executives in front of us, hoping for taxpayers/government to help them out. These people have gone way beyond the American Dream of a house with a picket fence, a wife, two children and a vehicle in the driveway. The Greatest Generation taught us most of the lessons we need to know to have a happy and prosperous life. Did anybody listen?

Right now - today - we need more than ever to value the lifestyles of the ordinary people who honestly are trying to provide the necessities for their families and hopefully, higher education for their children.

We need to take a look at some "ordinary people" and place them on pedestals for all to see as prototypes for the good life.

Perfect Break For Tonight!

If you are not a football fan or if you would just like to forget the woes of the day, tonight on Turner Classic Movies, you can watch Guys and Dolls. This is a classic musical with some great music and an easy to follow story. Of course, some of us have also seen it on stage. Bet you will be humming along with the songs. It will be a nice break for you as you wrap some of those gifts that are currently cluttering the dining room table.

37 Days to the Crawford Ranch

As you probably know, President George W. Bush visited Iraq this weekend. The photo above shows him ducking one of two size 10 shoes thrown at him.

Not everyone feels George W. has been a good president. It is good for us to pause and realize that not every president had to endure 9-11. I still like to remind people that not only is this man a born-again Christian, he is a reformed alcoholic. This is a man of strong character who has overcome weakness. This is a gentle man who loves his country and has respect for all Americans.

Let us all pray that George W. and Laura make it back to their Crawford, Texas ranch to enjoy life again. (Yes, I know they have purchased a home in Dallas, but I think you'll find them most of the time at the ranch.)

Way to go on the ducking, Mr. President - all the baseball has paid off!

Company Coming In For A Celebration? No Room For Them To Stay?

You know, every year we all have little problems over the holiday season. We juggle schedules to accommodate people coming in for the Holidays.

We try to find just the right gift for every person, some of whom we may not know so well.

Then there is the card writing and the gift wrapping, the decorating outside and in.

Where is everyone going to stay? Ah, yes. Exactly where is everyone going to stay?

On a different train of thought, most of us have moved our homes. When I lived in Canada, we used to generally close the sale of the old house and the new house on the same day. When I sold real estate, I was generally very busy from January to March with closings at the end of the school year in June. School commenced in September, so the families were settled in long before the children started their new schools. It is pretty common for families to want to be ready for their children to start school. Nothing odd about that.

Well, there's this family moving from Chicago to Washington and I know their girls have to begin school on January 5th, but their new home won't be ready for them till January 20th.

I kind of think that someone did make arrangements for them to come in a couple of days before the 20th of January when they are to attend a celebration of the hubby/father becoming President of the United States.

Now, I have to tell you that for me at this time of the year, the expression "no room at the inn" came to mind. I'm not going to tell you that Barack Obama is quite that important, but, you know, I really think some hotel could make a floor available for the incoming President so the girls could start school at the beginning. I am asking for a floor because we would like some room for the secret service and some staff.

I could suggest that someone who has a big RV or maybe even a tour bus . . . yes, that's it, Aaron Tippin's Tour Bus . . . that would be perfect!

No wonder, our country is in such bad shape! People just have no idea how to adapt to a situation!

I mention Aaron Tippin's Tour Bus because it is nice and large and there is a trailer on the back and Aaron seemed like such a nice guy when we met him this summer in Tennessee at a Cracker Barrel.

If we can't solve the little problems, how are we going to solve the big ones?

Too Bad Youth is Wasted on the Young - Remember That One?

There is an old expression that goes, "Too bad youth is wasted on the young" although I don't recall exactly how long it has been since I heard it.

Our favorite freshman college student is recuperating and should be back up and running soon - almost as good as he was - after a motorcycle accident.

All I know to do is pray for a full recovery and we have been doing that every day.

The thing that scares me about young people - and of course, my own experience with them is limited - is that I was also young once!

Every time I think about young people being on their own and making their own decisions, I get nervous. Why? Well, because I made some pretty stupid decisions when I was in my late teens and early twenties. Didn't you?

The whole thing when you are younger is that it seems that doing something once will not result in any major problem. Well, of course, it can . . . and sometimes it does.

I think, as their parents, grandparents and friends, we have to re-assure them that we indeed do still love them. We need to hug them and be thankful that they are still here on this earth. We need to help them with whatever the consequences are and help them back up and on their feet again.

Surprising though it may seem, bright young people do get it! They do know that this was perhaps not the best thing they could have done. There is an element of embarrassment that a major consequence this time was being hauled off in an ambulance to a hospital and parents being called. I know because this happened to me when I was 21.

If you think of the flip side of young people experimenting and having "good times", you probably know someone who has never had a productive life, never married, never even left their parents' home.

Every young person has to learn - even though it might be the hard way - for himself or herself.

We cannot live their lives for them. We can only be here for them when they come back - a little bit broken physically or mentally. We have to show them how much we do indeed love them and how happy we are they are still alive!

Over the years, more and more things have been invented to make it even harder for young people. They may be dealing with things not yet available when we were young.

One day, we'll awaken to a son, daughter or grandchild who has finally put it all in place. It might us a little while to really put it all together that this person has finally pulled their life together. The clue then is to just pretend they were always that way! That's the part they will really appreciate.

As we enter the holiday season, let us all make sure all our offspring truly know how much we love them and how much we want the very best for them - in spite of themselves!

And . . . to any young people reading this . . . please remember how much we want you gathered 'round with us at Christmas time. We may not be exciting but we are very, very loving!

As a little boy at a Christmas family gathering once said, "God Bless Us Everyone!"

East Texas Snow: Old Friends, New Friends & Snowboots!

Well, there is comfort in having friends you have known a long time. As I age, I hear them calling me "old friend" a little more often. Is that because I am getting older? Where did the time go? Is it possible Frank Hilliard got older?

Welcome to readers - like Sean McAllister who sent some of his snow down to Texas! That was such a kind gesture, Sean - and Merry Christmas to you also!

Each time we have cold weather, the local weathermen always talk about a Canadian cold front. Hmm . . . Blame it on Canada!

I may well be the only person in East Texas with bone fide snowboots in my closet! Yes, yes, we were preparing to attend our niece's wedding in the Detroit area six years ago in November. As I do not do that area without snowboots, I acquired a pair from a local Payless Shoe Store for under $10. One assumes they were not selling well here . . .

I do still have them . . . and I am not afraid to wear them, so beware! (Of course, there are no mats or proviso for removing them once inside in the foyers of Angelina County! Hmm . . . a way to increase the economy in East Texas - selling boot trays, mats and snowshovels.

Uh, oh, didn't I come here to get away from all that?

Global warming indeed! Bah Humbug!

Snowing in East Texas!

We were at church this evening and when we came out after choir practice, there was snow on the SUV.

It has been snowing in East Texas this evening. That tends to shut things down and there was even a bridge closed here. It was announced that most schools will start two hours later tomorrow morning. (Most children are bused to school and so they will send the buses out two hours later.)

The whole point is that the weather is usually pretty nice here and people tend to wear just a jacket or sweater, not a coat. Nobody has boots. So, when it snows here, it is a big deal and you see people out on their lawns taking photos, rolling some leaves in snow to make at least a snowball if not a small snowman.

Now it has snowed more at other times, but this was still a bit of a surprise. You see, generally we run the house air-conditioning during Christmas week.

So, you folks up north don't need to feel too envious of us today!

Thoughts On Oprah & Any of Us Re-Gaining The Weight

Well, it's all over the internet and it's in the January issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. Oprah has gone back up in weight and currently is tipping the scales at 200 lbs.

How can this be? How did this happen? Doesn't Oprah have consultants, trainers, chefs and all manner of people to help her keep the weight off? Sure, she does.

From experience, I can absolutely relate! There is one BIG problem: FOOD TASTES GOOD! That is the problem right there.

When you are down, it feels good to eat. When there is a celebration, it feels right to eat. Food tastes good.

I lost about 65 pounds about seven years ago with the help of Richard Simmons' website. I was very careful and followed the food guidelines and read Richard's motivation.

I slowly regained about 20 pounds back and so I went back to this website. I am down about eight pounds again, so I have about 12 to go. In the middle, I went down about 10 pounds; then prescription drugs helped negate that. Anyway, I am back on track.

Richard Simmons' website has some nifty tools to track your weight and to journal about what causes you to gain weight. On Monday evenings, Richard hosts a meeting where we congregate to get lots of excellent motivation for the week.

Holiday time is the worst time for trying to keep away from foods rich in calories. Richard has suggested eating something "safe" before attending a party. Of course, chatting with people helps also. Taking a low-calorie dish will also help! At a sit-down dinner, sampling helps. (That is, just take a couple of spoonfuls of each item.)

Some days I just am absolutely able to say "no" to pizza, extra helpings and rich foods in general. As I have said before, my scrapbooking helps to keep me calm and keeping calm is part of what keeps me from overeating. Getting proper sleep every night also helps.

Another thing I try to do is to not have calorie-laden foods in the house. My frig is pretty low in fat and carbs, you see!

There is a factor that I have been thinking a lot about since I put together my book, Bumpy Road To Texas. Some of us tend to define ourselves by events or appearances.

All my life, I had defined myself as a fat person. My parents told me I was fat, and so did lots of schoolmates.

After I lost 65 pounds and could go into any store and buy any style or design I wanted, I still felt I was fat. So, I will conclude that Oprah - inside - still has always felt fat.

How can Oprah lose that weight again? She has lots of money, but money is not the tool that helps you lose weight. Feeling good about ourselves is what helps us lose weight. Feeling confident helps us lose weight. Having supportive (not nagging) people around us helps us lose weight. We are not stupid. We do know what foods to avoid and what ones to eat. When we feel good about ourselves, it is so much easier to eat the right foods. Food is not as important to us.

When we focus on other people and causes, we find it easier to lose weight. By the way, keeping super busy is not necessarily the answer to keeping the weight off because sometimes when we eat in a hurry, we eat the wrong things. (I keep a 100-calorie snack bar handy so I do not let myself get really hungry!)

I sure hope that Oprah is able to lose that weight again, because she is a role model for lots of us!

Relaxing 101: Two Hours To Wind Down Boston Legal Tonight

Boston Legal (ABC, 9:00 p.m. Eastern) will air its final episode (two hours) tonight. I am sure it will not have the impact of the last program of M*A*S*H or Seinfeld, but it will probably be pretty interesting!

The story lines run concurrent with today's real world in that the Crane Pool & Schmidt law firm has financial problems and might have to sell. Alan Shore (James Spader) will go to the Supreme Court to argue allowing Denny Crane (William Shatner) to take a non-FDA approved drug to slow his Alzheimer's.

Candice Bergen's (Murphy Brown) character prepares to wed John Larroquette's (Night Court).

It is assumed they will wind down with another glimpse of Alan and Denny on the balcony with their cigars and whiskey even though at one time I thought they might give up the cigars.

As television programming goes, this David Kelley production has been a good one to watch when you had the chance. The actors have won several Emmys but I think the real reason to like it is that we are familiar with most of the actors.

So, tonight, we'll kick back and really watch the entire two hours as they tie off all the loose ends.

It's Going To Be One Of The Best Holidays Ever!

This week will be a busy one with everyone realizing that we only have 17 days left to prepare for the Christmas Holiday.

So, it is a time for making lists. Make a list of who you have to buy for, what you have already purchased and give yourself a choice of two or three items for those left on your list. Make it easy on yourself!

Try to go to the stores at a time when it might not be so busy - lunch time, dinner time or on a day when it is poor weather.

Everyone knows that times have been tough and people are not expecting lavish gifts.

We are wanting to visit with family and have some delicious food together.

Make a list of what you would like to serve. Do not be afraid to ask people to bring one item for a buffet. They'll be happy to do that.

So, make lists, go light on the spending and ask for help.

Get plenty of rest and enjoy yourself! It's going to be one of the best holidays ever!

Pickel Barrel Wisdom, Swiss Chalet Catch-up

Some days, perhaps on a weekend, we do not have so many things we are obliged to do. Wouldn't that be a good time to spend some time with family or to call someone you haven't seen for a while?

Life is so hectic now for just about everybody that we tend to lose contact with families at a distance, and old friends.

As we come up to Christmas, we tend to think about more people that we don't see all time time, particularly as we write Christmas cards.

Even in your own town, there are probably people you just haven't seen for a while. What about calling them up and asking them to meet you for lunch next Thursday?

Life is going to happen anyway, so you need to step out and make it happen a little more special!

A year ago July, we were going to be in Cleveland, Ohio to see Keith's sister, Louise. We had that arranged that for some time.

Then, Judy in Port Hope, Ontario was to have some serious surgery. So, I said to Keith, that it didn't used to take long to drive from Cleveland to Toronto. (It didn't seem to take as long, a few years ago.)

We went to Swiss Chalet with Judy and her family - her granddaughter, Charlotte and grandson, William. William always calls me Martha in Texas. I like to keep up with how he is doing so his Grandmother sends lots of photos of everyone.

Well, then I thought about my friend, Belinda in Toronto. Hmm . . . if I asked her, would she and her husband meet us for lunch as we drove through?

Well, they did. Yes they did. We met at the Pickle Barrel on Leslie Street, not far off the 401 Highway. We had a wonderful time! We took photos and we laughed and we just had a grand time.

That September, Belinda had a stroke and in January of this year, Belinda died. My friend of 48 years was gone! I have such good thoughts about that day at the Pickle Barrel!

And Judy - she's fine, thank you! And we'll see her again come spring.

And Louise, she's doing very well, and waiting for Christmas to see her first great-grandchild again. We saw her again this spring and we scrapbooked some more photos. And we'll do that again come spring.

Take a little more control of how your life goes by picking up the phone and calling someone and making an arrangement to see them if it's possible.

Life happens - that's true - but we can make it happen a little nicer, not just for us but for all those around us.

Have a fine Sunday!

This is the Job for Me!

I see today that the British Medical Journal has completed a study on the effects of smiling. In fact, it made front page of our local paper.

I guess so! Just where do I apply for these studies?

Enjoy your day - in spite of the news - and if you smile a lot, it will come back to you!

Clarifying Chrysler's Status

There are at least two interesting points about Chrysler. It is stated by several sources that Robert Nardelli has been receiving $1.00 a year since becoming C.E.O. last year.

Now, we can assume that Mr. Nardelli (who came from Home Depot) obviously receives some benefits, bonus, expenses, perks - whatever you want to call it.

Chrysler is 80% owned by Cerberus Capital, so one wonders why they are looking for federal funding.

It seems as though perhaps the Big Three are more like the Big Two (Ford and General Motors) + 1.

The drama continues tomorrow.

Well . . . Yes Sir . . . I'd Be The First To Go!

Well, I hope you have been able to catch at least a little of today's Bailout Hearing before Congress. Probably the most obvious statement was made by Chrysler CEO, Robert Nardelli, when asked about a merger with GM. He said that it was obvious that he would be the first person losing their job. So, he sort of gets it!

In a way, it is good to see some reality TV. It's a lot like us regular folk trying to balance everything.

Speaking of reality, I should probably mention that it was reported by TMR (The Motor Report) that it was rumoured that Mr. Nardelli was working for $1.00 a year from the onset of taking the Chryser job.

Stay tuned . . .

Reserved Parking - Hybrid Vehicles!

As you know, Toronto is my hometown, so I was pretty happy to find this photo taken in Windfields, North York (Toronto) last year!

The Executives of Ford, Chrysler and General Motors have all driven to Washington from Detroit in hybrid vehicles. That's what I am reading from AFP (Agence France Presse, datelined Washington today). They will appear before Congress tomorrow to renew their request for $34 billion bailout.

It is also stated in this same article that all three chief executives will work for salaries of one dollar a year. GM and Ford are also selling their executive jets.

This is the soap opera to watch tomorrow.

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Well . . . Maybe We Can Talk Now!

In case you haven't read the update, it looks like the "Big Three" Automakers may have come to some realistic thinking!

Ford CEO Alan Mulally has already said he will be driving to Washington for the Thursday and Friday bailout hearings. That was a start.

Now, GM Chief Rick Wagoner will drive a Chevrolet Malibu hybrid sedan the 520 miles from Detroit to Washington.

Now, yesterday, Hubby suggested that Mr. Mulally would likely have a chauffeur or as we say in bad economic times, a driver.

So, I got to thinking about the back seat of a Chevy Malibu Hybrid and I am thinking that the old style of the executive sitting on the right side of the back seat will be history.

I envision Mr. Wagoner in the front passenger seat.

So times are changing . . . or so we hope.

In the article I read, I saw a few loopholes including no bonuses in 2009. Could you make that this year, gentlemen?

Haven't heard from the Chrysler head yet, but I would hope for a PT Cruiser to be coming across that road . . .

Gentlemen, start your engines . . . the economical car might take a little longer to get to Washington. Of course, I hope the ride is smooth so you can be scribbling on your legal pad as you drive. And I certainly hope for good road conditions - no snow, no ice!

Welcome to the real world, Gentlemen!

By the way, did I tell you about my friend who got into a mid-size sedan last week with her two grown daugthers to drive straight through to Peterborough, Ontario from Lufkin Texas to see their grandfather who has been very sick? Did I tell you they had a blowout in the first day? Did I mention they had plenty of snow on the way back down? Did I tell you that one daughter was just 45 minutes late for her SFA college classes (in Nacogdoches, TX) yesterday morning?

No, I didn't mention this until these ladies finished their endeavor. Who says people - especially women - are soft these days? Who says people can't do what they feel they have to in a given situation?

Get with the program, gentlemen! Turn on your cell phones, take some snack bars and bottled water and wear casual clothes. Hope you don't have another car following you and I truly hope you don't have a blowout like my friends had.

My friends left Grandpa in stable condition - encouraged by their visit. Can you do the same and leave our money . . . and it is OUR money in stable condition?

Think about us . . . especially we seniors . . . everyday watching our investments dwindle. Think, Gentlemen, THINK!

We await some good news about your Wednesday drives to D.C.  Let us see the Dow go up and our portfolios make some recoveries.

Come on, boys, Christmas is coming! Oh, and safe journey. Text me if you need to!

An Ah Ha Moment!

When I was a kid . . . yeah, yeah, I know I am always starting off that way . . . but things were not that bad, so perhaps we need to remember those times! Well, as I was saying . . . when I was a kid and my Dad was sales manager for a boxboard company, we were told to always get what we purchased in a box. It should be obvious that you support what brings home your bread and butter!

Well, what do you suppose an auto executive should use to get to Washington? Well, perhaps he should drive rather than take an executive jet?  Yes, Ford CEO, Alan Mulally, has finally had an ah ha moment and will be driving to Washington for the hearings on bailouts later this week!

About time!

Let's hope the Chrysler and GM people also come to their senses!

It's Time . . .

Today, yes today, we wrapped some Christmas gifts. By doing a little each day, we'll be finished the work part and able to enjoy the holidays! If you haven't been shopping yet, go when it is an off time, if you can. Think about going to the store when it is raining or snowing so there will be less people at the store!

Christmas is about family not about working. So do your wrapping ahead so you can enjoy yourself. Decorating the tree is fun when you do it together. So, that will not really be a job!

Baking cookies is something you might like to do together also. Many hands make light work and you'll all be able to enjoy this festive season.

Hope you are starting off the season on the right foot with an excellent attitude! It is not the gifting, it's seeing family and friends and being together! Everyone knows there is less money to spend this year, so forget that and be blessed, not stressed!

For Your Best Holiday Season Ever - Take It Easy!

Lots of people purchase holiday gifts well in advance. We try to do that. This weekend, we will be assembling what we have purchased. Did we get something for everyone? Will they like it?

I suspect that we are not much different from most people this year in that we have tried to find suitable gifts at economical cost. (After all, we do like to be able to eat and pay bills and everything did go up this year.)

Hubby has always left this up to me and I suspect this is the case in many households.

I have been hearing a few stories about how folks are treating each other at the stores.

Of course right now there are massive sales and there were flyers indicating unbelievable low prices on premium items. That was if you were at the store before dawn and if there were any of that store’s quota left by the time you got to the item. Then, of course, you had to line up to pay for your “fantastic buy”.

Now, that scenario is not for me, but I did hear a few stories from people who did brave the battle. There was rudeness and bumping and some people actually were physically harmed. In a New York Wal-Mart some one was killed. This just might not be what the holiday season should be about!

We are looking forward to family coming in from South Korea and Los Angeles. We are going to finally meet significant others.

The thrill of seeing family gathered together is very special. That trumps all gifts. The Christmas Eve buffet at our house after Church service could be a jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly and a loaf of plain white bread. It won’t be, but I don’t imagine what is on that buffet table will come close to the crushing hugs for the young people we haven’t seen in over a year.

We will not be the only family overwhelmed by just seeing in person those who have been far away, some serving our country and some building their careers and lives.

We’ll be thinking about the decorations that were up last time they were home and serving the shrimp with the same cocktail sauce they had the last time.

You see, all the time we have been missing them, they have been thinking about how it was last time they were here.

I can do that! I can make it as much like it was last time as possible!

Of course, Ava will be the big difference! They are going to realize how long since they were home when they see Ava. She is no longer a baby in arms but a little person, running, reaching, touching and smiling. Ava has her own thoughts and ideas and she is busy all the time!

So, we have a list of food to serve and we will pick up the staple items this week, well in advance. We have the list of what to order to pick up at the last moment.

We will try to place the decorations as we always do and then we will try to rest to be in optimum health to enjoy this time.

At church, on Christmas Eve, it has always been a special time for me. Of course, some people will go elsewhere but we are fortunate that many of the families will come home. There will be lots of hugging and greeting and looking to see how everybody looks. Every year, I look at the young people and realize they have their own lives now. For twelve years, I have been watching them grown each year. When I look at their parents, I see how happy they are to have them home. I see their pride!

We also have grandparents come in and every year they delight in seeing their families and many enjoying a little warmer weather for a while.

At choir, we are working on special music – a little tougher than usual – to sing at our candlelit service.

Where does “Black Friday” and Shopping Madness fit into this scenario? It doesn’t . . . not at all.

Just have those Hershey’s kisses (wrapped in red and green foil) in the dish they remember. Have the decorations like you had them last time, and put out some extra chairs for the new members of the family.

Make everything like they remember it because that’s what they’ve been thinking about when they booked their flights and planned their trips. Get lots of rest because you’re going to need plenty of energy to give those extra long hugs. Don’t forget the tissue box on a living room table. (Actually, Ava likes to pull the tissues out of the pop-up box now, so it’s not just for happy tears!)

And, if you are working too long hours and run out of time, just do the sensible thing: order pizzas – two or three different kinds and sit back.

Get rested up and stay away from the craziness. Your children and grandchildren can get a meal anywhere in the world – even in a mess hall or in the back of a Humvee – but they’re coming home to see you! Make it just like they have been remembering it!
